All India Kisan Sabha will be organising a fast in Alappuzha from February 12 against the faulty implementation of the Kuttanad package.Kisan Sabha All India general secretary, Atul Kumar Anjan, will inaugurate the fast by Sabha State secretary and State office-bearers on February 12. Prior to this, an agitation declaration convention will be held at Ramankary in the district on January 8.

The sabha district president Joyikutty Jose said that the Kuttanad package which envisaged the all-round progress of the agriculture sector in Kuttanad has turned into a scene for corruption and illegal nexus between officials and contractors.

“The package which began with an estimate of Rs. 1,840 crore has now ballooned to Rs. 5,000 crore. However, only Rs 136 crore has been spent during the last four-and-a-half years. The governments which were giving statements in the name of food security were taking a deceptive attitude towards farmers.

The subsidies given to farmers were withdrawn one by one. The farmers are harassed and cultivation delayed by giving them seeds from the Kerala State Seed Authority that do not sprout,” he said. He alleged that the Kuttanad area is under the threat of communicable diseases. The Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) canal flowing the area should be cleaned immediately. Those who reside on both sides of the canal should be rehabilitated. The drinking water woes of the Kuttanad people should also be resolved, he said. He said that the ‘one paddy, one fish’ scheme of the government should be implemented in Kuttanad.
