KOTTAYAM: In what appears to be a strategic move to take the wind out of the sails of Congress efforts to bring the Kerala Congress merger issue into the UDF during the scheduled bilateral talks on Monday, Kerala Congress(M) leader K.M. Mani and Kerala Congress(J) leader P.J. Joseph announced the contours of their unity efforts here on Saturday evening.
A joint press conference came at the culmination of a State secretariat meeting of the KC(M) and a meeting of the State and district-level leaders of the KC(J) held separately here.
According to Mr. Mani, a formal unity announcement will be made at a public meeting here on May 27 after a joint meeting of the State committees of the two parties gives the green signal to the unity formula. The official name and symbol of the joint outfit will be declared on the occasion.
After Mr. Joseph's resignation from the LDF and the State Cabinet on April 30, both parties had appointed respective committees to finalise the road map to unity.
They had decided on a two-phased merger programme. In the first phase, the unified party will be led by a 111-member high-power committee known as Steering Committee. Below them will be the State committee.
The sharing of the top posts has been completed, with Mr. Mani being the chairman and leader of the legislature party. Mr. Joseph will be the working chairman and deputy leader of the legislature party.
