Thrissur: The Kerala Agricultural University plans to develop a plot to demonstrate upland rice cultivation under the Paddy Mission – Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana project.

KAU Vice-Chancellor K. R. Viswambaran will sow the seeds at the plot in front of university headquarters on Monday.

Objective

The objective is to improve rice production and utilise the untapped potential of upland rice cultivation in the State, according to sources.

Drought-tolerant

Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Pattambi, had developed drought-tolerant and high-yielding rice varieties specifically for upland cultivation.

RARS variety

The demonstration plot is planned to include both traditional and high-yielding rice varieties as well as the promising upland cultures developed at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pattambi.
