The Principal Bench of the Kerala Administrative Tribunal has ordered to release the pension benefits of municipal employees within a month.

The order was issued by the Bench comprising Chairman K. Balakrishnan Nair and member Mathew C. Kunnumkal on the basis of a complaint of N. Marutha Muthu, a former employee of Palakkad municipality, and other pensioners. The pension benefits of Mr. Muthu who retired on October 31 last year were not released so far stating the municipality did not remit its subscription to the central pension fund.

The tribunal said the amount due could not be delayed on such grounds. On sanctioning the benefits, the Urban Affairs Department was bound to release the funds. The department could take legal recourse for recovering the subscription dues from the municipalities in due course, the tribunal said.
