A training programme initiated by college students here has bagged the State-level Samanwaya Award for the best social project instituted by Altius, a student initiative of the World Malayali Council.

Altius State-level programme coordinator K. Balachandran said here on Thursday that the award-winning team comprised A. Sussky and Shivshankar Rajmohan (Sree Narayana College, Kannur), Anju Upendran (Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women's College, Kannur), Ashwin Balachandran (Pariyaram Dental College) and Vijayatha (St. Joseph's College, Pilathara). The project was planned and implemented in tune with the idea of providing urban amenities to rural areas of the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Mr. Balachandran said Altius had conducted training camps for college students on leadership, personality development, communication skills and social commitment in all districts in the State. Student leaders selected from these camps had volunteered to impart the same training to students in government higher secondary schools.

This year, the organisation would implement the project in 100 schools in the State.
