`Kannur can be a model in mangrove conservation'

THALASSERY: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran on Thursday said that Kannur district can be a model in conservation of mangroves.

He was inaugurating planting of mangrove saplings near the Dharmadom bridge here as part of a river bank protection scheme.

The district accounted for the largest extent of mangrove forests, though the mangrove-rich areas here were facing conversion. The tsunami had reinforced the importance of mangroves for protection of coastal areas, said Mr. Rajendran.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan presided. District panchayat president K.K. Narayanan and District Collector Ishita Roy were present.

At another function here later in the afternoon, Mr. Rajendran said reference libraries were vital for the dissemination of knowledge.

He was inaugurating the State Reference Library started on the Revenue Divisional Office premises here.

Rare historical documents had to be preserved for future generations, said the Minister. Mr. Balakrishnan presided. Thalassery municipal chairman K.P. Raveendran, Kerala Sahithya Akademi secretary I.V. Das and retired administrator Murkot Ramunny were present.
