: As part of its endeavour to promote Kannada language and culture, the Kannada Development Authority, a statutory body of the Karnataka government, will organise a function here on August 18 to felicitate Kannada medium school students in the district.
As many as 64 students with excellent academic track record would be given cash prizes and gifts at a function at the Edaneer
Madha, near here, at 10. 30 a.m. on Sunday, said K. Murlidhar, secretary of the Authority.
N.A. Nellikkunnu, MLA, will preside over the function. It will be inaugurated by Kannada litterateur and film director Nagathihalli Chandrasekhara.
Kasaragodu Chinna, former chairman of the Karnataka Konkini Academy, and I.V. Bhat, former Chairman of Kannada Sahithya Parishad (Kerala Chapeter), will attend the function, Dr. Murlidhar told a press conference here on Friday.
While 30 Kannada medium students who scored A Plus grade in all subjects in the SSLC (class X examinations) last year would be given
cash prizes of Rs.7,000 each, 34 students who topped in the examinations would be given Rs, 6,000 each. They will also be given a wrist watch, a bag, Kannada-Kannada dictionary, and Kannada-English dictionary, certificate, memento and a pen set.
The Authority has chosen 750 students from five States bordering Karnataka, with 375 of them chosen from Belgaum division alone, for the award as part of promoting Kannada language and its rich cultural heritage among the families settled in the border localities, he said.
The Authority is engaged in promoting the language and the native culture among the new generation families settled across India and abroad and the Department of Culture has earmarked Rs.5 crore this year for the cause, he said.
