PALAKKAD: The Kalpathy car festival came to a close with the `Rathasangamam' on Thursday.

Mounted on Rathams (temple cars), the deities of Old Kalpathy Temple and Chathapuram Temple were taken in procession in the morning.

By the evening, about sunset, all the Rathams returned to the temples. Abhishekams were held and the deities were re-decorated before taking them out in procession in floral palanquins around midnight.

The palanquins would return to the temple at dawn, on the first day of the Tamil month of Karthigai coinciding with the Kadamukham festival in Mayiladuthurai.

There were huge crowds at the temples to witness the final running of the temple cars.
