Krishna Iyer calls for thorough reshaping of the judiciary

Kochi: The former Supreme Court Judge V.R. Krishna Iyer on Thursday released a book Judiciariyile Abhicharangal written by T.C. Ulahannan.

E.X. Joseph, president of the Justice Krishna Iyer Human Rights Foundation, presided over the function.

Justice Krishna Iyer said that the book should be read by every citizen, judge and lawyer. "When the judiciary declines and is reluctant to face criticism, democracy weakens," he said.

He said that judges should feel the pain of the people and write their judgments with total commitment to the welfare of the people. He called for a thorough reshaping of the judiciary and hoped that the book would help achieve this end.

M.M. Lawrence, general secretary, CITU, received the first copy of the book.

Ramkumar, advocate, pointed out that the judiciary could not avoid criticism and should always be prepared for merciless examination of its judgments. He said that judges should be above corruption and favouritism.

Advocates P.S. Sreedharan Pillai and Gopalakrishnan said that criticism of the judiciary should always be positive and not negative. They welcomed the book as a great contribution towards making the judiciary look at itself in self-criticism.
