PATHANAMTHITTA: Former Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas, Thiruvalla MLA, has called upon the Janata Dal(S) workers in the district to support the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate K. Ananthagopan of the CPI(M) in Pathanamthitta.

Mr. Thomas was addressing a meeting of party workers in Thiruvalla on Sunday, opposing the decision of the JD(S) not to support the front in the Lok Sabha elections. The MLA said the JD(S) had expressed its strong protest to the LDF against denying it another chance to contest the Kozhikode seat through his resignation from the Cabinet. Working against LDF candidates was against the JD(S) national policy to oppose the Congress and the BJP.

Mr. Thomas said he was against a split in the party. The JD(S) had been pursuing a firm anti-Congress stand, which was even a step ahead that of the CPI(M).

The MLA recalled that there were instances in the history of the socialist party when its Ministers declined to comply with the party decision to withdraw from the Ministry.

Official faction

A meeting of the official faction held at Vennikkulam, near Thiruvalla, called for the resignation of Mr. Thomas from the Legislature for going against the party’s decision to oppose the LDF.

JD(S) district vice-president Joe Ennackad said disciplinary action would be taken against those acting against the party stance.
