THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The J.C. Daniel Award for 2008 has been conferred on K. Ravindranathan Nair, popularly known as General Pictures Ravi. Minister for Culture M.A. Baby and jury chairman Adoor Gopalakrishnan told reporters here on Friday that Mr. Ravi was selected for his contribution to Malayalam cinema.

“He produced films without profit motive and was not concerned about their market potential. These films earned international reputation to Malayalam cinema. He had also contributed significantly to the in distribution and exhibition of such films,” they said.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan described Mr. Nair as the precursor of new wave cinema in Malayalam. He was instrumental in introducing directors like Vincent, Aravindan and many others, Mr.Gopalakrishnan said.

The jury which selected Mr. Nair comprised K.G. George, K.R. Mohanan and KPAC Lalitha. The award has a purse of Rs.1 lakh, a citation and a statuette.
