Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is unlikely to pull out its nominee in the Union government, senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran told presspersons here on Tuesday.

Mr. Karunakaran said he knew how the IUML leadership would respond to critical political situations of the kind that prevailed in the country at present. From his close and long association with the IUML, he believed that the party would not leave the Congress and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Ministry at this critical hour.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed is the party representative in the UPA Ministry. His confidence stemmed from his conviction that the IUML would always place national interests above everything else. So it would not ditch the Congress on the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement which was in the interest of the nation.

Mr. Karunakaran also was confident that the UPA government would win the proposed confidence vote .

Earlier in the day, the Congress leader visited the residence of his son, K. Muraleedharan, who had refused to follow him back into the Congress but chosen to continue as State president of the Nationalist Congress Party. Mr. Karunakaran’s was a personal visit since Mr. Muraleedharan’s father-in-law had expired recently. He was also at the residence of Mr. Muraleedharan’s wife.
