Kudumbasree urged to take up development projects
ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan announced here on Monday that Kudumbasree units that took up paddy cultivation projects would be given interest-free loans.
Inaugurating the 12th anniversary district-level celebrations of Kudumbasree Mission and and the fourth anniversary fete of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government on the Alappuzha Beach, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Kudumbasree Mission had overcome several political attempts to weaken it and had shown exemplary courage and determination while doing inspirational work in society.
At present, Kudumbasree units are given loans for paddy cultivation at 1% interest. This will be done away with and they would be given interest-free loans, he said amidst applause from over a lakh women who had assembled on the beach.
Mr. Achuthanandan asked the members of Kudumbasree to get involved in more social development-oriented projects, including paddy cultivation. The government would support them unconditionally, he said.
Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, who delivered the keynote address, announced that bulk loans taken by Community Development Societies (CDS) of Kudumbasree would be charged only 4% interest from now on.
He declared that Bhavanasree micro-housing loans taken by Kudumbasree members would be waived.
Dr. Isaac said marketing companies would be set up across the State under the aegis of the Kudumbasree, on the lines of the Marari Marketing Company at Mararikulam, this year.
Dr. Isaac gave credit to Kudumbasree for keeping the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the State free of corruption.
He said a social audit of the projects would be done in December, after new local governing bodies come to power.
The 10 best-performing CDS in the district were also announced on the occasion. The Kanjikuzhy CDS bagged the first position, followed by the Pulinkunnu CDS and the Pathiyur CDS in the second and third positions.
