From glass painting and puppetry to metal engraving and products fashioned out of coconut shells… the ingenuity and dexterity of about 700 school students were on display at the Thiruvananthapuram sub-district work experience fair held at Government Model Boys High School, Thycaud, here on Thursday.

Teams from over 85 schools participated in the event which also included Science, Mathematics, Social Science and Information Technology exhibitions.

The winners of this fair would get a chance to compete in the district- and State-level competitions.

The fair had an on-the-spot competition category wherein the students prepared ornaments, puppets, and coconut shell curios in three hours. These products were judged for content, social usefulness, pupil participation, and finish, among other criteria. If T. Sachin a standard IX student of Chinmaya Vidyalaya Vazhuthacaud tried his hand at such diverse events as glass painting, aluminium foil work, water painting, and wool work, to name a few, the ‘Smart Room Power Controlling Device' thought up by Akhil and Bhuvanesh from Government School, Kamaleswaram turned many a heads at the fair.

This smart device has a generator, an infrared emitter and collector, a counter, and a pulse generator for components.

The device can reportedly carry out the functions of a generator, a burglar alarm, and an automatic power regulator.
