PALAKKAD: K. Achutha Menon, 83, who was member of the Commonwealth Air Force during the Second World War and who flew over Hiroshima soon after its bombing by the U.S. on August 6, 1945, passed away here on Wednesday. The body was cremated later.
Mr. Menon, who reached Japan in 1946 as a member of the Commonwealth Air Force, visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki despite his higher authorities refusing him permission to visit the war-ravaged cities.
Mr. Menon who joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 was a member of its fourth squad which was sent by the British to capture Burma.
He is said to be the first Indian to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the bombings.
He is survived by wife, Sharada.
