LDF to take up issue in the Assembly

The State government should implement the Agriculture Development Policy report submitted by the expert committee headed by K. Krishnankutty, Deputy leader of the Opposition Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said.

Inaugurating a farmers’ meet here on Wednesday, Mr. Balakrishnan said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) would take up the issue in the next session of the Assembly.

Government policies were forcing farmers to leave agriculture. Farmers had no assured income and the cost of production was going up. The prices of their produce such as rubber, coconut, coffee, cardamom, paddy, vegetables, etc. were coming down, he said.

Agriculture in the State could be developed by attracting the new generation to it. For this, agriculture should be a steady source of income. The area under paddy cultivation in the State was shrinking. The LDF government, in 2008, brought in a law to protect wetland and paddy in the State. But, the United Democratic Front (UDF) government gave sanction to illegally convert 20,000 hectares of wetlands/paddy land in the State, he said.

Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan was also a party to the decision to legalise the conversion of paddy and wetlands. Now, the government was trying to amend the legislation. This would bring about the end of paddy and wetlands in the State, he said.
