PATHANAMTHITTA: In a major operation against illegal sand-mining, the police arrested three persons and seized three country-boats from the Pampa in and around Aranmula on Tuesday.

The raid was jointly launched by the officials attached to the Aranmula and Koipram police stations under the Kozhencherry circle following a tip-off.

The raid party led by K.R. Anilkumar and S.Nandakumar, Sub-Inspectors at Koipram and Aranmula stations, conducted the combing operations in country-boats as no motorboats were available.

Three boats used for sand-mining between the Arattupuzha Bridge and Malakkara stretch were seized while the workers managed to escape after submerging two other boats.

But the police managed to arrest three workers, who were identified as Babu (30), Radhakrishnan (35) and Uthaman (32).

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sabu P.Idiculla and Circle Inspector R.Chandrashekharan reached the spot and made arrangements to keep the seizures in safe custody.

The DySP said absence of a speedboat was a major handicap in conducting effective operations against sand-mining.
