The proposal for setting up an IIT in Palakkad has been revived, Union Minister of State for Human Resources Shashi Tharoor has said. If new IITs are sanctioned, Kerala is likely to get one. Giving away the Smart@Palakkad awards here on Saturday the Minister said that when proposals for nine IITs were mooted earlier, Palakkad was a candidate.

However, the proposal was not included in the 12th Five Year Plan as the Planning Commission did not consider the proposal.

But, the Minister said, after he assumed office, the proposal for IIT in Palakkad was revived.

“It is going through various Ministries for clearance,” Mr. Tharoor said. — Staff Reporter
