A local office of the Congress and houses of Congress activists at Mammakunnu near Chala here were vandalised in an attack on Friday that left two people injured.
The Congress leadership here alleged that the attack was carried out by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists. The Congress observed a hartal in the Edakkad area in protest against the attack. The police said that the local Congress office at Mammakunnu came under attack in the early hours of Friday.
Vandals damaged window panes, furniture, and a TV set and then stormed into the house of Congress Dharmadam block committee secretary T. Surendran. His mother Soumini (65) and brother Vijesh (34) were assaulted when they tried to prevent the attackers.
Both were admitted to a hospital at Thalassery. Black oil was poured into the open well in the house. The nearby house of another local Youth Congress functionary, identified as Abhilash, also came under attack. A motorcycle parked inside the compound was overturned. Furniture and electronic items in the house were damaged in the attack.
According to the police, the attacks were suspected to be a sequel to a squabble between two groups of local youths over an issue of a mini lorry allegedly not allowing a bus to overtake it on January 31. The drivers of the two vehicles were allegedly activists of the rival parties.
The Congress leadership, however, said that the attacks were suspected to be an attempt to frighten witnesses in a case relating to similar attacks by BJP activists in the area in 2003. The case was in the court for trial, they added.
Police personnel were deployed in the area in view of the tension. Congress leaders, including district Congress president K. Surendran, visited the houses and the party office at Mammakunnu.
