KOZHIKODE: The Hotel and Restaurant Association has demanded that the “unjustifiable” cess imposed on turnover tax be withdrawn.

In a release here, its State president N.B. Krishna Kurup termed the imposition of the cess illegal and a means to harass hoteliers. He said the one per cent cess being imposed since this financial year, in addition to the tax already paid, could not be levied as per the VAT law and the Kerala Income Tax Act. “The government must direct the officials not to collect cess from hoteliers without passing on the burden on the consumer too,” he said.
