Thiruvananthapuram: The Health Department has intensified inspection of hotels and other eating joints in connection with the Attukal Pongala.

The food inspectors of the department and the City Corporation have, for the past few days, been conducting inspections to seize stale food and cold drinks made using ice, the quality of which could be suspect.

People should ensure that only food kept in hygienic conditions is consumed, Director of Health Services T.K. Kuttamani has said.

The department has arranged five medical teams, including ambulances, in preparation for the Pongala festival. Special treatment facilities have been arranged in all hospitals under the department. A rapid action force, which includes food inspectors and technical assistants, has also been set up to handle emergencies.

A 24-hour control room has been opened at the District Medical Office (ph: 2471291, 94463 59150).
