Says accusations are baseless and have no proof
Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has challenged Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran to prove his allegation that he (Mr. Balakrishnan) had a role in the conspiracy behind the large-scale incidents of violence and booth capturing in the local body elections in Kannur on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) office here on Sunday, Mr. Balakrishnan said Mr. Ramachandran should not have spoken like the vice-president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).
He said the Union Minister was levelling baseless charges without verifying facts. Mr. Ramachandran was raising allegations without providing any proof.
The Union Minister was blinded by his anti-Marxism, he said.
Mr. Balakrishnan said if Mr. Ramachandran had advance information about outbreak of violence on the polling day, he should have ordered to deploy Central forces in the district.
He said that when the polling process was under way, it was the Election Commission which took the decision to deploy more police forces.
The Minister said the increase in polling percentage in the first stage of the local body elections was a clear proof of the steps taken by the State government to conduct a free and fair poll.
Alleging that the United Democratic Front (UDF) was behind the incidents of violence in the district on the polling day, Mr. Balakrishnan said Mr. Ramachandran was trying to cover up the violence planned by the UDF.
