Education Minister M.A. Baby has said it is unfortunate that the cause of the Perumon train accident still continues to be a mystery.

He was inaugurating a function at Perumon on Thursday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the accident in which 105 persons lost their lives.

Ten coaches of the Kanyakumari-bound Island Express from Bangalore fell into Ashtamudi Lake at Perumon on July 8, 1988.

Several relatives and friends of those killed in the accident gathered at the site and paid floral tributes at the ‘Smrithi Mandapam' there.

Commemoration

The commemoration function also comprised a homoeo medical camp against chickenpox.

The function was organised jointly by the Indian Red Cross Society, Kadappayil Nursing Home, Kerala Parthikarana Vedi and the Anchalumoodu Friends of Birds under the banner of the Perumon Train Accident Commemoration Committee.

The function was presided over by president of the committee N. Sudheendran.
