The potential of learning history should not be dismissed nor should the past be misinterpreted to project one ideology or the perceptions of one community, Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan said. He was inaugurating the valedictory function of the 33rd annual session of the South Indian History Congress (SIHC) on the University of Kerala campus at Kariavattom on Sunday.

“History does not just mean merely listing events of the past, but they hold the answers for the grave issues of the present. One should look at history as a means of bringing about progress,” said Mr. Achuthanandan. He also lauded the efforts of the SIHC in bringing the subject to the forefront and encouraging students and faculty to engage in in-depth study of the subject. Organised by the Department of History, all days were packed with a slew of sessions and discussions. Close to 500 papers were presented.
