KOLLAM: Convener of the United Democratic Front P.P. Thankachan has called upon the State government to declare a hike in minimum wages for cashew workers by issuing a notification.

He was inaugurating the collectorate march and dharna here on Wednesday by cashew workers under the banner of the Kerala Cashew Workers Congress (KCWC).

He said that the cashew workers were burdened by the unbearable rise in prices of essential commodities. Cashew workers of Capex, who were victims of food poisoning, should be compensated with Rs.2,000 each.

The gratuity dues of all cashew workers who retired from government factories should be cleared at the earliest, he said.

Mr. Thankachan alleged that the State government had failed in implementing labour laws. DCC president Kadavur Sivadasan presided. Former KPCC president C.V. Padmarajan, KCWC general secretary V. Sathyaseelan and Congress leaders A Shanavas Khan and P Jermias spoke.
