Sudheeran for more talks on the issue

  • Says Government should publish a draft of the reforms planned
  • `The ordinance would eclipse the existing forums'

Kasaragod: Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran has said the formation of a higher education council in the State through an ordinance will affect the autonomy of universities and result in centralisation of power.

He was inaugurating the college day celebrations of Kasaragod Government College on Wednesday.

Mr. Sudheeran said timely reforms should be implemented in the education sector.

However, a concept like the higher education council should have been presented in the Assembly and then subjected to discussions at various forums before being implemented, he said.

The higher education council ordinance in its present form would eclipse the existing forums in universities, including the senate, syndicate and the academic council.

Any Government wishing to reform the education sector should publish a draft of the reforms planned and seek the opinion of various sections of society, he said.

Various concepts in the education sector faced vehement opposition before gaining acceptance. Mr. Sudheeran said reforms in the education sector should be implemented after arriving at a consensus.
