Trees fall in strong winds; traffic disrupted
Thrissur: Strong winds and heavy rain caused extensive damage in the district on Thursday. In all, 40 houses were damaged. Most of the houses were damaged when trees uprooted by the strong winds fell on them. District Collector V. K. Baby asked those residing near the Asuran Kundu dam in Thalappilly Taluk to stay alert as its shutters could be opened any time. The water level in the catchment area was in full capacity following heavy rain.
Strong winds hit normal life in Irinjalakuda and surrounding areas on Thursday morning. Traffic was interrupted for a few hours as uprooted trees fell on the road at many places. Vehicles could not ply in the Irinjalakuda-Muriyad route as a huge tree fell on the road. Power lines snapped and supply was disrupted.
A bus shed of the Chandra Memorial School in Kuttur collapsed as a huge jackfruit tree fell on it. No casualty has been reported. A bus parked in a shed was damaged.
Huge tidal waves, which lashed the coasts of Kodungallur block, caused heavy damage. At Perinjanam, five houses were damaged and many trees uprooted. Three houses were damaged at Pappinivattam too. Houses were damaged in Nadathara, Pananchery, Chavakkad, Orumanayoor, Kunnamkulam, Kondazhy and Chelakkara villages. Power supply was disrupted at most of these places.
As monsoon intensified again in the district after a short break, the Collector has directed various departments to be ready to handle any emergency.
