The police on Wednesday arrested four persons on the charge of carrying hawala money and recovered Rs.39.10 lakh from them in two separate incidents in the district.

A team of police officials led by C. Sibi, Sub-Inspector, Sulthan Bathery, arrested Suhaib of Nellodi at Kaniyampetta in Wayanad; Jaffar of Kaniyarakkal at Koduvally in Kozhikode; and Muhammad alias Unais at Kuttippuram in Malappuram district at Muthanga near the Kerala-Karnataka border.

The team recovered Rs.24.10 lakh from them. Mr.Sibi said the accused were transporting the money from Bangalore to Kozhikode in a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus headed to Ernakulam. During interrogation, the accused revealed that a travel agency office in Bangalore had given the money to hand it over at the agency's office in Kozhikode.

In another incident, the police arrested P. Muhammad of Puzhamkara at Koduvally from Kalpetta town and recovered Rs.15 lakh from him.

The accused was transporting the money from Mysore to Kozhikode in a KSRTC bus and the money was kept in a bag, the police said.
