The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the CPI(M) in Ottapalam on Tuesday to protest against the murder of Deepu (23), a DYFI activist on Monday, was total.

The CPI (M) alleged he was murdered by some youths connected with the Sangh parivar and Siva Sena while he was engaged in his electric work along with five others.

During the hartal there were stray incidents of violence in some parts of the Ottapalam town when private vehicles were stopped by the hartal supporters.

Schools, business establishments and markets remained closed in Ottapapalam taluk due to the hartal. Top CPI (M) leaders who visited the house of the murdered DYFI activist included M. Chandran, M. Hamsa, K.S. Saleekha, K.V. Vijayadas (MLAs), CPI (M) district secretary C.K. Rajendran, former MP, N.N. Krishnadas among others.
