ALAPPUZHA: The nation-wide hartal sponsored by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad was partial in the district, particularly in the second half of the day.

More than 50 services of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operated with police convoys from major depots including Alappuzha, Cherthala, Kayamkulam and Mavelikara. However, private buses kept off the roads while boat services of the State Water Transport Department from Alappuzha to Kavalam, Nedumudi, Kottayam and Krishnapuram did not move from the depots. Though major shop establishments remained closed till dusk, several small shops and business enterprises, particularly in the Zakaria Bazaar, Vellakinar regions were open right from morning. Stationery shops and bakeries near the Alappuzha General Hospital too were open.

By afternoon, several four-wheelers too were seen plying on the roads.

Though there were reports of an auto-rickshaw being damaged by hartal supporters in Kayamkulam and a few other vehicles being stopped on the road, police said there were no major untoward incidents.
