The dawn to dusk hartal called by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the four grama panchayats, Palamel, Nooranad, Chunakkara and Thamarakulam, in the district on Thursday to protest against the occupation a portion of the Noornad Leprosy Sanatorium in the district on Wednesday by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), passed away without any untoward incidents.
The shops under the four grama panchayats remained closed. Vehicular traffic was partially disrupted in these panchayats. Mavelikara MLA, R.Rajesh led the march by the LDF in the evening. The State government had earlier gave sanction for the ITBP to set up a unit at 50 acres of the Sanatorium. The total area of the sanatorium is about 140 acres. The LDF is demanding that a super specialty hospital or a large hospital be set up at the Sanatorium, which is under the Health Department.
Mr.Rajesh will begin an indefinite fast before the Sanatorium from May 25.
The ITBP personnel, numbering 300 now, have already put up tents and fenced the area. They have dug bunkers in the spot. The ITBP plans to set up a 1400-strong battalion in the area once they complete the construction in one year.
