PALAKKAD: Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran inaugurated the ‘Haritha Keralam’ project at the Akathethara grama panchayat here on Friday by planting tree saplings in a 25-acre plot under the Irrigation Department.
Under the project, 3,16,201 tree saplings will be planted in different parts of the district at a cost of Rs.3.04 crore allotted by the Social Forestry Department.
The project, jointly implemented by District Panchayat, Forest and Local Administration Departments under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme aims to plant 1 crore tree saplings in the State during 2009-2010.
The meeting was presided over by District Panchayat President Subida Isahaq and addressed by K.K. Divakaran, MLA; District Collector M.C. Mohandas; Chief Conservator of Forest W.S. Suiting, among others.
In another function at the Moyan Government Girls School the Mr. Premachandran presented a Rs.1-lakh ‘Jalatharangam’ award to the school for their contributions towards ensuring clean drinking water.
The school won the award for their work on the testing of water quality in different water sources of the district.
