The Union Ministry of Textiles, State Department of Handlooms, Kozhikode District Industries Centre and the Kozhikode District Kaithari Vikasana Samithi are jointly organising Onam Handloom Expo 2010 from August 1 to 22 at the Regional Public Health Laboratory compound on Pavamani Road in the city.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, B. Shivaprasad, General Manager of the District Industries Centre and convener of the programme, said Hantex and Hanveev besides 30 handloom cooperative societies of the district and cooperative societies from other districts would participate in the expo. A special demonstration stall by the Institute of Handloom Textile Technology (IHTT) from Kannur would be an added attraction this year.

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim would inaugurate the expo at 4 p.m. on August 1.

Mayor M. Bhaskaran would preside over the function. District panchayat president K.P. Kunhammad Kutty would inaugurate the IHTT pavilion.

A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, would honour 10 veterans in the handloom sector on the occasion. Director of Handlooms P.R. Louis would perform the first sale.

Before the inaugural function, there would be a colourful procession from the Indoor Stadium to the expo venue at 3 p.m.

The exhibits would include different types of saris, dhotis, shirting, furnishings and floor mats.

Mr. Shivaprasad said 20 per cent rebate given by the State government could be availed for all handloom products.

Besides, the customers would get a gift coupon for every purchase worth Rs.1,000. One of the coupon winners would be selected through lot the next morning for a free purchase of Rs.1,000.

Draw of lots

There would also be a weekly mega lot, the winners of which would get one washing machine each. The expo would be open from 9 a.m. to 8p.m.
