The Sikh community in the city celebrated the 543rd birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Devji along with the 50th anniversary of Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Kochi, with a colourful procession (Nagar Kirtan) and ceremonies at the Thevara Gurudwara on Sunday.

More than 500 members of the Sikh community, including those from Thiruvananthapuram and Coimbatore, participated in the procession, which was being organised in the city for the first time.

The celebrations will continue till November 2013 and a number of cultural programmes have been planned for the year-long celebrations..

The Gurudwara at Perumannoor in Thevara was established in 1955. It is the only one in the city and the centre of the Sikh community’s cultural and religious life here.

Expansion of the Gurudwara building is also being planned in view of the increasing number of visitors to Kerala. More rooms will be built to provide free accommodation to the needy. A meditation centre is also being planned as part of the anniversary celebrations.
