Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan has said that there is no problem in considering Sree Narayana Guru as God.

Talking to reporters at his residence at Kanichikulangara, near here, on Thursday, Mr. Natesan said that all those who had learned history would have an understanding of the issue.

Mr. Natesan was reacting to the recent observation of the Supreme Court that the oath by an elected representative should be either taken ‘in the name of God’ if the person is a believer or ‘solemnly affirmed’ if the person is a non-believer. The apex court’s observation came in a case filed by Umesh Challiyil whose oath (as member of the Kerala Assembly) was declared void by the Kerala High Court on the ground that he had taken it in the name of Sree Narayana Guru. The Supreme Court had observed that ‘human gods’ could not be considered as God while Mr. Challiyil moved the apex court for repealing the order of the High Court.

Mr. Natesan said it was wrong to assume that the unity of the SNDP and the Nair Service Society would do no good to the Left Democratic Front. There is an assumption that the unity will do good to the UDF. The unity also helps achieve social justice which the Left parties pursue.

“We do not intend to form a political party,” he said. Commenting on a statement of Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan against community-based organisations, he said the CPI(M) leader was not able to attract even his own party men.
