A SCHOOL FOR DESIGN: Saboo Coloniaa

Saboo Coloniaa is to Malayalam film ad world what Mohanlal or Mamootty is to acting. A star in his own league, Saboo has weaved magic by creating posters and flex boards for hundreds of Malayalam films.

His masterly craft has been instrumental in luring the audience to the theatres. The designer, who is based in Kochi for many years, is on a new mission now.

To encourage more young designers enter the design world, he has launched the Saboo Coloniaa Institute of Design in Kochi. The institute will offer a three-month programme in Total Graphic Designing.

Saboo hopes that his new institute would be able to cater to the growing demand for designers in Mollywood. "In an industry where the workforce is over 30,000, the number of designers active in the field is less than five. The opportunities in designing are immense".

His dream to launch an institute got a push when he realised that youngsters interested in taking up designing as a career lacked practical experience.

"Youngsters, who approached me with certificates in Adobe Photoshop for a job, failed to deliver when asked to come up with a creative idea. The knowledge of tools is there, but these newcomers lack work experience," says Saboo.

He says students of the institute would be given training in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Digital Photography. They would be taken to shooting locations, editing studios, printing centres and film-output centres to get a real experience of the reel world. Training will also be given in fashion and industrial photography.

The initial response has been enthusiastic. "Students from the Amrita Institute of Applied Arts and Science will do their internship at the newly launched institute. The industry has also ensured support for the new venture", he adds.

The programme in total graphic designing will start from July 10.
