KOLLAM: Greens under the banner of the Velichikala Action Council will march to the Nedumabana grama panchayat office on October 30 to register their protest against the failure of the grama panchayat to issue ‘stop memo’ to a private company allegedly engaged in unauthorised clay-mining in the area.

Action council patron Odanavattom Vijayaprakash said since the past six months, the company was engaged in clay-mining without the permit of the panchayat. Yet the panchayat committee was not issuing the ‘stop memo’.

Hazards

He said the mining activity was creating serious health and environmental problems in the whole area. In protest against this, residents of the area with support from greens were on an agitation.

Mr. Vijayaprakash said as per the company’s own admission, 5.69 lakh litre of water was being drawn each day. He alleged that the actual figure could be much more. This had resulted in the area becoming drought one. He said prior to the mining operations, the area was not drought-prone.

In 2005, the then District Medical Officer had submitted a report to the State government stating that mining activity was creating serious health problems in the area. Mr. Vijayaprakash said that as Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan had supported the agitation against the mining activity.
