The Forest Department has reintroduced a hiked grazing fee for the cattle brought to the State from other States.

The fee collection, which was stopped in 2008, began at the Forest Department check-post at Walayar on September 17. On an average, the daily fee collection comes to Rs.5,000 daily, department officials at the check-post said. The charge collected for buffalo is Rs.15; cow or bull Rs.10 and goat Rs.5, they said. They said no rate had been fixed for elephants and horses since these animals were rarely brought to the State.

The officials said that the fee was reintroduced as the Auditor General found that the Forest Department was losing a huge amount by not collecting the fee.
