Mayor Prasanna Earnest on Friday suspended two officials of the Kollam City Corporation on charges that they allegedly misappropriated cash collected as property tax from several persons.

Those suspended are Bill Collectors Akhil C. Varghese and Preetha Xavier. The Mayor said in one instance they had collected Rs.23,006 as tax from a private hospital and issued a bill. But in the Corporation records, the amount was not shown. At least 10 such misappropriation shown by the two had been detected. The Mayor has ordered a probe into the whole incident. The Mayor said though the Corporation Secretary Sabeena Paul had conducted a hearing on the issue on Thursday, the same was not brought to her attention. It was only Friday she learnt about it.

The Mayor also said measures are on to solve the drinking water problem. Out of the 43 tube wells in the city, only 31 are operational. Five are partially functioning. Steps have been taken to repair the five and make it fully operational.

The ponds in the city targeted for cleaning include the Kottarakulam near the civil station, the Amrithakulam and Thamarakulam.
