Malpractices detected in construction of seawallRs.1 lakh for families that lost a member in tsunami catastrophe
ALAPPUZHA: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said here on Wednesday that the State Government would complete the construction of houses taken up by voluntary organisations for the tsunami-affected.
Addressing a meeting of people of tsunami-affected regions in Alappuzha district at Muthukulam Block office on Wednesday, Mr. Rajendran said the Government would soon finalise a special package of Rs. 40 crore for reconstruction of Arattupzha. He said the panchayats should take the responsibility of finding land for the construction of houses.
The Minister said the Government would distribute Rs.1 lakh each to families that had lost at least one member in the tsunami. A proposal has been submitted to the Union Government, he said.
Fisheries Minister S. Sarma, who spoke at the meeting, said the Government had asked officials to rectify the "clerical mistakes" that obstructed the distribution of aid to the tsunami-affected. He said the special inspection teams of the Finance and Irrigation ministries had detected malpractices in the construction of a sea-wall in Arattupuzha panchayat.
Haripad MLA B. Babuprasad said steps should be taken to expedite the construction of the seawall at Arattupuzha. Kayamkulam MLA C.K. Sadasivan said priority should be given to completion of drinking water projects for Arattupuzha panchayat. Arattupuzha Panchayat vice-president Sivan Kunju and Arattupuzha block panchayat member P. Viswanathan said all projects promised for tsunami-affected should be completed immediately.
