THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has decided to acquire and hand over 15 acres of land of the Trivandrum Rubber Works for setting up an aircraft engineering bay at the city's international airport, Law Minister M. Vijayakumar has said.

He was speaking at a reception accorded to MLAs by the Federation of Residents' Associations (FRAT) here on Sunday.

A final decision on this matter will be taken after a high-level meeting on the issue scheduled on Wednesday.

The District Collector will inspect the site and submit a report soon, the Minister said.

The Government has already initiated efforts to make the Vizhinjam harbour and a High Court Bench in the city a reality.

Apart from Mr. Vijayakumar, MLAs M. A. Wahid, V. Surendran Pillai, J. Arundhati and R. Selvaraj were felicitated at the meeting. Each MLA was given a constituency-specific development plan at the meeting.

A memorandum submitted by the residents' association called for the setting of a separate department of implementing district development plans and the merger of the Vizhinjam, Vattiyoorkavu and Vizhinjam panchayats with the capital city and the submission of a special appeal by the Government for the setting up of a High Court Bench in the capital city

The FRAT president T. K. Bhaskara Panikkar was among those who participated in the meeting.
