KOCHI: K.T. Chacko, Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), said the changes in foreign trade policy were intended to make trade more liberal. The Government had reposed its faith in the exporting community, he said at a programme on foreign trade policy and procedures, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry here on Thursday.

Two new schemes have been introduced with a view to moving up the value chain. The special agricultural produce scheme has been expanded to include products from villages. The aim of making changes in policy norms for trade in gem and jewellery was to treat the sector on a par with other sectors, he said.

Earlier, Balagopala B. Pai, president of the Chamber, said the share of Kerala in total exports from the southern States during 2004-05 was 12 per cent. This was the lowest in terms of value.
