Kozhikode: The greenery project of Kozhikode Corporation is taking shape in a novel form. The civic body has come up with a fresh project of setting up two mango parks.

As part of the initiative Mayor M. Bhaskaran on Thursday planted a mango tree sapling at one of the proposed parks at Puthiyapalam graveyard.

The other park will be established at Eravathukunnu. Both the parks are being set up on lands in possession of the local body. It is also for the first time that a municipal corporation in the State has embarked on this innovative concept.

Councillor P. Divakaran said that the project had been envisaged under the People’s Campaign Plan.

A portion of the Rs.35 lakh, which has been set aside for agriculture sector, would be utilised for the mango parks. Usually the funds are allocated for cultivation of paddy and vegetables.

Twenty different varieties of mangoes would be grown at the 1.5-acre land at Puthiyapalam and 2.75-acre land at Eravathukunnu.
