No previous enmity or any other reason for the attack was known so far.

ALAPPUZHA: A 15-year-old girl and a 65-year-old man were killed by a man, who was allegedly mentally challenged, at Chavadi Junction, near Thuravur, here on Wednesday.

Zurumi, daughter of Zeenath of Kuthiathode, was returning home after tuition around 9 a.m. along with her friends at a study centre near the Chavadi Junction when Illickal Shaji, also a resident of Kuthiathode, attacked the group with a knife. While the girls ran for cover, Zurumi slipped and fell; following which Shaji jumped on her and stabbed her repeatedly. Ismail, a textile shop owner at the junction, who attempted to rescue the hapless girl, was also stabbed by Shaji. While Zurumi, a Class 10 student of the Thuravur T.D. High Sch- ool, died on the spot, Ismail died two hours later at a private hospital in Ernakulam.

Shaji, who was roaming around the junction after the incident, was arrested by the Kuthiathode police, who said he was mentally challenged.

No previous enmity or any other reason for the attack was known so far, the police said. Zurumi, the only sister of Arshad and Anzil, hails from a poor family, for whom K.C. Venugopal, MP, has promised a financial assistance of Rs.10,000.

The United Democratic Front would donate Rs.1 lakh as well, Mr. Venugopal, who rushed to the spot along with District Superintendent of Police E. Divakaran, said. Ismail is survived by wife Nabeesa and three daughters. The bodies were handed over to relatives after post-mortem at the Alappuzha Medical College morgue. Kuthiathode police have registered a case and are investigating.
