The accumulated garbage from the entire city will be removed before Onam, Mayor I.P. Paul has said.

The disposal of garbage, which had been stalled for the last one week, was resumed on Saturday.

“Three truck-loads of waste was sent to Salem today. The corporation has given strict order to the contractor to complete the process as early as possible. I hope the entire garbage accumulated at various points in the city could be cleared in one week.”

Some technical problems and non-availability of lorries to transport waste were delaying the disposal, he said.

“People’s safety is our priority. The corporation’s immediate concern is to clean the city first. We know it cannot be a permanent solution. The current system will continue till the decentralised waste projects are ready,” the Mayor said.

Those who protested against the corporation’s decision to employ a private party to remove waste have started appreciating the effort, he said.

Meanwhile, the corporation will call tenders for setting up an organic waste converter at Sakthan Thampuran Market on Monday
