KOCHI: Three officials of the Ernakulam sub-jail were transferred on Tuesday, a day after A. Badarudeen, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Central Zone, visited the sub-jail and collected evidence regarding the confiscation of mobile phones and ganja from inmates.
T.P. Varghese, superintendent of the Ernakulam sub-jail has been transferred to Devikulam sub-jail. P. Vijayan, assistant jailor at Viyyur Central Prison, has been posted at the Ernakulam sub-jail.
The collection of evidence was done after a surprise check conducted by A. Ijaz, Judicial First Class Magistrate-I, along with Ernakulam Town Central police personnel last week on complaints that some prisoners resorted to extortion from within the prison. Mr. Badarudeen had met jail officials and prisoners who were housed along with those suspected to be resorting to extortion. He had said that the final report would be submitted to the Inspector General of Prisons, only after interviewing the accused and the two prisoners, who complained against the accused resorting to extortion by making phone calls to relatives of prisoners. The accused, Nazeer, also known as Bhai Nazeer, and Jolly, also known as Jonappan, were shifted to Viyyur Central Prison and complainants to Aluva sub-jail following the surprise check.
In response to a query posed by Janakeeya Manushyavakasa Prasthanam to the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) using the Rights to Information Act about the present capacity of the jails showed that the sub-jail here houses 151 prisoners against the capacity of 28.
