What is unique about Sanmargadarsini Vayanasala (library), situated near the ‘fifth (railway) gate' in the city is not only its rich collection of books but a table that Mahatma Gandhi used when he paid a surprise visit to the library in 1934.

Even now, regular visitors to the library are quite excited when they talk about that occasion. It happened on January 14, 1934. Mahatma Gandhi was on his way to the Kozhikode beach to address a public meeting when, much to the surprise of everyone, he stepped into the library.

Many remember vividly the details of Gandhiji's visit as narrated by witnesses to the historic occasion: It was around 5.40 p.m. There was great excitement all around and the library's founder-president, N. Choyikutty, presented Gandhiji with Rs.101. Others garlanded him. Gandhiji also received a copy of the Bhagavat Gita and a roll of Khadi thread. Before leaving for the beach, Gandhiji thanked everyone for the warm reception…

The 11-member managing committee of Sanmargadarsini Vayanasala is making elaborate arrangements to celebrate the 77 {+t} {+h} anniversary of Gandhiji's visit. M.K. Raghavan, MP, would inaugurate a “Gandhian corner” in the library at 5.30 p.m. on Friday.

The library was established on January 6, 1929.
