Guruvayur Siddharthan, an elephant belonging to the Guruvayur Devaswom, has been conferred the prestigious ‘Gajaraja Pattam’, a title usually given to popular elephants.

The elephant was honoured with the title by the Navamukunda Temple priest Kalpaka Sankaran Namboothiri at Thirunavaya on Saturday.

Siddharthan had carried the Navamukunda deity for the past 15 years during the temple festival in accordance with the tradition of the temple. The elephant was brought to the temple in a procession with the accompaniment of the ceremonial Panchavadyam . A large crowd witnessed the honouring of the elephant. The event also marked the beginning of the 10-day temple festival, said V. Haridas, Navamukunda Temple manager.
