KOZHIKODE: The Koyilandy municipality has earmarked a Rs.2.5 crore for road development among the projects approved by the State Planning Board under the People’s Plan programme.

As many as 99 roads in the municipality would be upgraded, and 40 km of kutcha roads tarred, municipal chairperson K. Dasan said.

He said Rs.8.5 crore would be spent for development projects including housing schemes for the weaker sections and the handicapped.

Agriculture development will be allotted Rs.16 lakh, with 150 acres of arid land readied for paddy cultivation. A scheme for providing nets and fishing boats for fisher folk has been chalked out, Mr. Dasan said.

Explaining the improvements planned in the health sector, he said a sum of Rs.1.5 crore was earmarked for development of the taluk hospital.

The scheme included modernisation of two wards, installing of diagnostic machines and computerisation.

The construction of a three-storey building, for which a sum of Rs.10.90 crore has been earmarked, is on the anvil. The activities to be taken up include formation of ‘arogya sena’ and total blood donation literacy.

The educational project Guru Poornima envisages 25 components such as setting up smart classrooms, layout laboratory, and ‘Vayanalokathilekku Snehapoorvam’ a reading programme for school students among others. The municipality has set aside a sum of Rs.38 lakh for installing facilities for using renewable energy sources, including solar lamps and community ovens, he said.
