On Thiruvalla railway station premises

P.J. Kurien, MP, has sanctioned Rs.2 lakh from his local area development fund for constructing a building to house a pre-paid autorickshaw counter, information centre, and police outpost on the Thiruvalla railway station premises.

District Collector P. Venugopal had directed the Road Safety Council to set up a pre-paid counter following complaints of fleecing of passengers.

Many drivers were reportedly reluctant to undertake short trips from the station, leaving commuters in a difficult situation.

There were also allegations of harassment of passengers at the hands of criminal elements among the drivers. Commuters had been seeking proper lighting of the railway station premises, especially the vehicle parking area, and resurfacing of the railway station.

The Pulikeezhu Block Development Officer would supervise the construction of the counter. The information centre would provide information regarding Sabarimala and other pilgrim centres in the district.

The District Collector said all autorickshaws should have electronic fare meters from April 2.
